Hey, I had a feeling around September that I want to play a similar game and I started prototyping but life happened and I stopped my process. Then I found your video and I felt the click immediately, and I was super happy because that was exactly what I was looking for. I always liked rpgs and wargames but I think that long rulebooks are super underwhelming (to me) so that is the main reason I love Motley Crews.

I also appreciate darker fantasy tones, so I made my own version of the characters and the cards. Here you can see some examples. Maybe one day I will upload them to here as well. The models are hand sculpted casted in PU.

I really enjoyed this process and thank you very much for the inspiration!

Really nice! When I was reading the rules, I had a feeling that a rule similar to Pokémon Duels could be interesting. Like: at the moment that a figure is surrounded by other enemy figures in a way that it's impossible to move, the figure is instantly killed. This can be very tricky on boards with terrain, which may create new strategies. Example:

[   ] [m] [  ]
[k] [w] [b]
[   ] [m] [  ]

where m = mountain, k = knight of player 1, w = white mage of player 2, and b = barbarian of player 1.  Supposing that the barbarian just move to this position, the white mage is instantly killed because it was surrounded by enemies.

I wanted to make these into more durable cards. I laminated each one of them with the Motley Crews logo on the back. Just a quick job, but I think they turned out pretty good.

I've made a travel set in a small tin. I shrank the minis to about 12mm and put magnets in their bases. The tin fits the cards, minis, dice for tracking health, and a dry marker.

I look forward to more STLs!

So cool, very nice work!

TAKE ALL MY MONEY!

(+2)

I made a campaign version and a tournament version XD this is incredible fun!

YOOOO, i love this, i made the cards in spanish, can i put them up? should i send them to you?

(+2)

Thank you! That is so cool! If you join the Discord there are translation guidelines in the community-efforts channel. If you publish them here on itch on your own, let me know and I'll link to them. But I aim to have all the translations published on my page too in the end.

Really great work. I can't wait to give it a play test and make new minis. I post them on Sketchfab for you to look at !! Already thinking of an Egyptian theme like this ? https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/warriors-of-the-nile-ec55e55fbbb64b6a85e6a570f03...

Awesome! You got a great Knight, Mage and Arbalist there. The archer is my favorite!

Hey thanks !! I have made minis for quite a few published games. I sent your details to other games makers and they are really impressed. Love the whole pagan tarot card theme. Check out my work here https://sketchfab.com/grell/models

Oh wow, that is amazing stuff!! And thank you so much!

Hey there. I put your miniatures on Sketchfab here. Hope you don't mind. Should get people as hyped as me !!

Ancient Greek theme: knight - centaur, barbarian - minotaur, arbalist - amazon, black mage - satyr, white mage - nymph :)

Good ideas there. Working on a classic set of minis right now. Update soon !!

Really fantastic work, as soon as I saw the video I ran out to grab an old chessboard from a 2nd hand store, whipped out some old minis, printed some new ones, and now I'm decorating the terrain with my son.

We noticed that the chessboard has a back side that is 10x10, so we want to try and play on the larger field too. We are also building some scenery like elevated stairs, trees and rocks (like yours) to add more diversity/constraints. We will come up with our fun set of rules for these additions.

Thank you so much for putting in the time and effort,I can see my son and I bonding a lot over this game :)

I do have one suggestion though. Would it be possible to get the printable cards in PDF format? with the jpeg I can't seem to find the right size so the prints match the size of classic magic/pokemon cards (for sleeving)

Thank you, I’m very happy to hear that! :)

That is weird, it prints at standard playing card size at 100% size for me. Did you use the correct version for your paper?  (A4 or letter)

Yes, though perhaps there are other settings like "shrink to fit" or "fill page" or "borderless print" that interfere with the process. However there is also another factor, which is that the cards are not aligned, so they pretty much need to be cut one by one as opposed to cutting them all at once precisely with an exactonknife & ruler.

My suggestion (what I did) is: go to https://mtgprint.net/ and create a pdf with 9 random cards, with some 0.2mm margin between the cards and without "cut guides". Then you can open the PDF in inkscape, where you can align your card images to the background MTG cards for perfect size and alignment. Then you can remove the eccess MTG cards and the card-trader logo, add your logo if you so desire and export as PDF. If you keep an SVG project with the background cards still in place it will give you the blueprint for future "extended" card sets which will remain perfectly aligned and will print to exact size.

I hope this helps :)

Thank you, I'll have a look at fixing that the coming week! :)

Got it fixed? Your video was so great to watch!

Thank you! No, it hasn't worked itself to the top of my task list yet. It should still print at the correct size at 100% as is though!

Can I "finish off" my own pieces to deprive my opponent of victory points? :)

No, even if you are the one to kill your figure your opponent scores the point!

(+1)

Discord link is dead!

Fixed!

So glad the algorithm sent me this video. Without having played at all, here is my Assassin idea (since i have minis for it)

Assassin
Life 4-5
Move 4
Attack 2
Reach 1
Abilities
Withdraw - If you have not moved a figure this turn, the Assassin may move 1 tile in any direction, including diagonally.
Poisoned Dagger - The figure attacked by the Assassin take an additional 2 damage at the end of your opponent's turn (or 1 damage at the start of the turn indefinitely until healed).
No idea if it's balanced at all.

Oh and I'm wondering your thoughts on rolling a d4 & d8 to randomly place the terrain pieces in the neutral area.

Sounds cool! Coming up with new figures is a lot of fun.

I’m pretty anti-randomness in games like this but people are 100% encouraged to try things like that and homebrew on their own!

(+1)

Cool shit! I'd recommend adding two icons/symbols for the direction of the ability/effect: one for orthogonal, one for diagonal. Then you could remove it from the text. Also makes it easier to make new units.

One more question. Again :) A player on their turn may not move their pieces or perform actions with them. What should be done in a "deadlock" situation, when neither player wants to move or perform an action?

(+1)

You would simply pass back and forth until someone decides to move. But if both players refuse to act I guess it would have to be declared a draw!

(+1)(-1)

I think this should be specified in the rules. If the both players pass 2 times in a row, it's a draw. This makes it less advantageous for the player with more victory points to pass. The "2 times in a row" requirement ensures that the player can pass without fear of being caught by the opponent in a worse situation and resulting in a draw.

I showed your video on this game to my dad, and he loved it.  it is under appreciated to have simple but elegant game like this, that takes up very little play space, and as dad pointed out, doesn't even use dice! we are very excited to try it out and think the castle and river board ideas are very cool, and look forward to updates.

one question I do have though is I believe you mentioned creating new hero's, so will it work by, you can pick any five hero's from the roster, no duplicates? or were you just saying that you are creating alternate hero models?

(+2)

Happy to hear that! :)

Both! I’ll be making an alternate team of models first, so two players can play with different ”official” teams.

I haven’t decided how I want this to work. Either simply add more characters to the teams, or have a small roster to pick from. The challenge is to make them balanced so that every model sees some play.

awesome!

(+1)

Saw the youtub video of your game, this is pretty much what I wanted to make, good job !

I'll finally have a game to play my homemade figures

Awesome, thank you!

I saw the video you made about your game Motley Crews last week, and oh boy, was I happy to see it! I also have fond memories of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monster Chess chapters of the manga from back in the day. I’ve also been thinking for a long time about making my own similar game, and your video about Motley Crews filled in the blank spaces of the idea I had for my own project!

Would you mind if I used some of the game mechanics from Motley Crews in my own game? I’d like to take it more in the direction of deck/team building with lots of variety.

Would love to hear what you think. For now, keep up the great work, man. Much love!

Of course, go right ahead! I’d love to see what you make!

Awesome! Thanks a lot brother :)

here are couple of character ideas me and my sister came up with after playing a few rounds.

Monk 6 hp

move 3

attack 2+2

reach 1

Ability

Split focus: if the monk has more than 1 enemy adjacent ,than his normal 4 attack can be split between 2 enemies for 2 attack

Red mage 3hp

move 3

attack 2

reach 3

special actions

spells

Fireball: This does 2 damage to an enemy in the Rad mage's reach and knocks them back 1 square, if the enemy can not be move because of terrain or the edge of the board they take an additional 1 damage. Can be used once every 4 turns.

Searing Aura: Every character within the Red mage's reach takes 1 damage except the red mage. can be used once every 3 turns.

Ally Ignition: Pick an ally within the red mage's reach, they gain +1 on their next attack. can be used once every 5 turns.

On it.

Really fun game, and it's extremely quick to learn. I've already bought the minis as well, but I wanted to try it out while my brother was visiting this weekend. It's a very quick game, and both mages are extremely fun to play and positioning is key. Both the Knight and Barbarian are useful in their own way, especially the Knight's charge ability in conjunction with the Arbalist. Nevertheless, the Arbalist seems just a tad underpowered, and in the roughly 4 to 5 games we played, we mainly used him to make pop shots at mages. Besides that, I'll definitely look forward to playing this again sometime soon! To anyone wanting to play it, I would recommend using tokens to keep track of the White Mage's abilities. I've included an image showing a quick slapped-together version I made for the occasion. Great fun!

We are actually working on a few clarifications and rules-tweaks over inte the Discord server, which  aligns perfectly with your feedback! I’m very happy you like it! :)

so excited to try this

came here from the video cant wait to bring this to my tables to bother my friends with

(1 edit)

This is awesome, can't wait to play it!

Clarification: if I convert an opponent piece and it dies, is it in my graveyard or the opponents? Can I conjure it back, or can my opponent?

The minimalism of a ruleset the size of a card is great,  but I think it would be good to have a full pdf of the rules with diagrams like in the video.

Thank you! :)

If you convert an enemy piece it counts as yours for the rest of the game regardless of how many times it dies and is revived (unless your opponent converts it back).

Yes,  a  comprehensive rules zine is in the works! We are currently working on tweaking a few things in the rules over on the Discord server before I publish it.

One more question about healing and resurrection. The resurrection rule says a figure enters play with 2 life. The healing rule says a figure can be healed for up to 3, but not above its starting life value.

So, for a resurrected figure, what is considered its "starting life value" for healing: the 2 life it has after resurrection, or the original printed value on its card?

Another good question! :)  It’s the original printed value.

One more question: if my figure is killed by my own bomb, does the opponent get a point? :)

Yes! Same thing goes for the Curse. If a figure you control dies = opponent gets a point.

Hello! The game looks pretty nice at first glance :)

I have a few questions:

  1. Can I move one piece but perform an action with another?
  2. Would it be possible for me to make a small computer game for retrocomputers based on these rules? It would be just for fun, maybe for competitions, and strictly non-commercial. I would, of course, include clear credits and links to the original game.

Hey, thank you! :)

1. Yes

2. Sure thing, that sounds awesome!

(+1)

Hello,

Your game is awesome, I have translated the cards in french because french people are kinda bad at English !

I would love to have a quality version of my translation. Is there a chance that you could either provide me the editable files or that I can give you the translation so you do it yourself ?

That would be awesome !

Have a nice day !

That is fantastic! If you send the translation to me at motleycrews@protonmail.com I'll put it on the official cards and make them available here.

Will you be making a second set of minis for the other side?

Yes!

(+1)

Is adjacency only orthogonal or diagonal as well? (For the black mage magic bomb)

(+1)

Orthogonal. My thinking was that this can lead to more interesting strategy with regards to ”friendly fire”.

can the Knight end his Special Ability move on an enemy square if the 2 damage is enough to defeat that enemy?   Or does he need to move completely through the enemy to the opposite side space to deal the 2 damage?

Good question! The Knight needs to move completely through and land on an already empty space.

Thanks!  I’ve played twice with my 9 and 8 year olds.  We love it.  I’m a big Warhammer and Final Fantasy Tactics fan and this game scratches that itch.  Well done.

Got the minis too and can’t wait to print and paint them up.

That is great to hear! :)

(+1)

Saw your video and came here right away! Definitely looking forward to playing this 💕

Happy to hear that! :)

(1 edit) (+1)

absolutely love the mechanics and the way this game looks. just a quick rules clarification - is there any mechanical difference between "taking damage" and "losing life"? for example, if the black mage casts a magic bomb while a barbarian is in the bomb's radius, does the barbarian lose 3 life instead of 2? or does the barbarian's fear of the occult only apply against effects specifically referred to as damage?

(+1)

No difference! So 3 damage is correct in that case. I’ll clear that up when I do an update on the cards in the future.

awesome, thanks. i had assumed they were the same but playing magic the gathering has made me pay a lot of attention to that kinda thing lol

I don't see the rules anywhere?

The rules are on the bottom right card, it’s all on the same document :)

(+1)

Ant chance of turning the cards sideways and making a letter sized copy for us Americans who may not have immediate access to A4 paper? Though I suppose I could make them myself if you did not have them readily available. I have the gelatinous cube checkers set from Severed Books (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/justinsirois/gelatinous-cube-checker-sets) that I'll be using for this until I get some minis put together. I think the dice should be pretty serviceable for the roles, and if it works out that my friends jump on board then I can see us kit bashing some minis together and even home brewing some new classes!

There is a lot of potential here that I'm very excited by, thanks for the work on this!

(+3)

Definitely, I’ll get that sorted asap!

Thank you! If you do any kitbashing or homebrewing, let me know! :D

Will do!

(+1)

Letter sized copies had been added!

Now that is some service, many thanks! I can't wait to get them printed out and get a friend over to play!

Also nice update on the rules/board image!

Sorry to spam replies, this is my last I promise. Not a huge deal but it is a bit hard to see the HP inside the heart on the ink saver files. Not sure how it will print but could potentially use a blank background in the heart.

Haha, no worries, I appreciate it a lot! Good idea, will fix that.

(2 edits) (+2)

Thank you for making this! It looks like a fun  game to encourage my friends to kitbash some minis. I have some rule questions that i would like to clarify:
1) (black mage) Is the bomb token discarded once it deals damage? I assume friendly fire is allowed, right?
2) (white mage) does converting enemies give points? It probably doesn't because the figures aren't dead dead
3) when an ability says within, it means within reach or within the spaces adjacent to the figure?
4) Is there a limitat on how many times a figure can be activated? Having too many figures near the white mage seems scary with conjure containment, but probably it's balanced by the fact it's so squishy
5) does conjure containment block for two player turns (you->opponent->you->opponent) or two generic turns (you-opponent)

And if i could throw in a suggestion, it's a bit hard to notice the red outlines in the inksaver version of the checkboard

Thank you for your time and patience! Can't wait to try it

(1 edit) (+3)

Thank you for checking out the game!

1) Yes and yes! Friendly fire and one use only

2) No, but if you convert an enemy figure and your opponent kills that converted mini, they get a point. This is the reason for the additional win condition of ”your opponent controls no figures” because otherwise you would lock yourself from winning by converting two enemies.

3) Within the figures reach, which is measured horizontally and vertically. So to attack one square away on the diagonal requires Reach 2 or more.

4) No limit!

5) Two full turns

Noted, I’ll fix that!

My pleasure! Let me know what you think after playing. I’d be happy to answer more questions :)

_n

(+1)

tysm! You were so fast! Printing the cards right now!

(+2)

The inksaver version has been updated!

Thank you so much! I have played the game and i had a blast! I didn't expect this much depth with this small ruleset! All characters felt fair and balanced, no one was a "leader" and deciding who mini should be activated came down to player preference and the board state, which is great.

I already started making my "grass board" from scratch and had an unrelated question: In your video you showed two mini-mountains that were adorable, were them diy? They reminded me of the small terrain in the gba version of fire emblem

thank you for your time and for making this game!

(+1)

Im so happy you enjoy it! Yes, the mountains were carved from XPS foam with a hobby knife and glued to a 40mm base. There is a hex nut inside for added weight. I love the look myself, it’s very FE as you say!
